Unlike posters in years past that showed Octavius the octopus, Clarence the Dungeness crab, Tucker the tiger rockfish or Odysseus, the sea otter, in the wilds of the Pacific Ocean, this year’s poster shows the complexity and roots of a coastal community: an estuary, where the river meets the sea and fish, invertebrates and other aquatic critters start life, grow up or return home. Birds and marine mammals depend on estuaries, too.  Our Estuary, Our Community” has herring returning to spawn and leaving their eggs on eelgrass, an important home for young rockfish, crab, salmon and herring. Eelgrass gives them cover from the birds above looking for a feast, as evidenced by the bird floating on the surface (take your pick - ducks, gulls and other waterfowl and shorebirds flock to the estuary when the herring spawn). A coho salmon also is returning upriver to spawn. Purchase this Poster
